Reduce Internet Pop-ups

**Avoid visiting websites outside of the Town that can infect your computer.

**DO NOT download and install programs from the Internet without checking with IT first.

  1. Update anti-virus definition files: Click here, see steps 1-4.
  2. Run a local virus scan: Click here, see steps 5-8.
  3. Install Spybot from: \\install\Support_IT\Spybot - Search and Destroy 1.3\spybotsd13.exe
  4. Install AdAware from: \\install\Support_IT\Ad-aware 6\aaw6181.exe
  5. Open Spybot from your Programs menu.
    1. Click "Check for problems."
    2. If problems are found, click "Fix Problems."
    3. If you are prompted to check for more problems on the next system restart, say yes.
  6. Open AdAware from your Programs menu.
    1. Click "Start," then "Perform smart system-scan" and "Next."
    2. Click "Next" to view scan results.
    3. Check mark all the objects under "Scanning Results" and click "Next" to delete them.
    4. If you are prompted to check for more problems on the next system restart, say yes.
  7. Open Internet Explorer options by going to Tools, Internet Options.
    1. Delete cookies and temporary internet files.
    2. Under Advanced settings, check “delete temporary internet files upon closing browser.”

If pop-ups still occurring:

  1. Stop using Internet Explorer. Instead:
  2. Install Firefox web browser from: \\install\Support_IT\Firefox Setup-0.9.3\FirefoxSetup-0.9.3.exe
    1. Accept license agreement.
    2. Choose Standard installation.
    3. Choose to “Use as your default browser."
    4. When it asks to import Favorites, etc, select “Import from Internet Explorer”.
  3. Install Pop-up Stopper from: \\install\Support_IT\Pop-up stopper\PopUpStopper.exe

To control spam:

  1. Permanently delete all spam from your inbox. You may use Outlook Junk Email filter to assist. Read about how to set it up in Outlook help.
